What is your professional background? How did your career as a franchisor for James’ Home Services come about?
Dean and Kali Morgan
We have experience as business owners and managers of separate local and international businesses. After relocating to Melbourne, we wanted to do something different together, but still wanted to have a flexible lifestyle. We found that more time at work apart wasn’t making us happy. We decided that working together and on our own terms was the way to go. After visiting the franchise expo and comparing the franchises we were interested in, we decided to go with James’ as it made the most family friendly impression on us.

What makes a great franchisee stand out against fellow franchisees or even competitors?
Dean and Kali Morgan
We think it is the same for any franchise really, there is no other way to go about it. If you are doing your work lovingly and with care, it makes all the difference. It really does. It is not just about dotting every ‘I’ and crossing every ‘T’ to do the job well. It is about making it your own so in the end you enjoy what you are doing. Your customers will see this too.

What are the benefits of having your own specific region?

Sticking to working in your region helps you develop a business that is truly localised and most efficiently run, since you do not waste time travelling. Being able to work close to home and knowing your neighbourhood and community makes it easier to develop your business.

Has being your own boss helped with work/life balance?
Dean and Kali Morgan
It was important for us to choose a home based business with low overheads and a flexible lifestyle to work around family needs. With James’ we can do that. We look towards each day and the next week with optimism and have an extremely positive outlook on our work and home lives.

What is your advice for new franchise owners?
Dean and Kali Morgan
Do your due diligence and know your contractual agreements. Other than that, stick to the system and have fun. Don’t look at it as an overly complicated business. Most of the support work is handled by a team of experts, so there is no need to overthink things. Anytime you need help or advice, everyone is a phone call away and we make sure that you meet most of the James’ crew to learn about the business and what works best. It’s all taken care of, so just remember to have fun.

Have you had any stand out moments that you probably wouldn’t have had outside this career path?
Dean and Kali Morgan
With this business we can offer solutions to people that want to make a change in their lives, which is something I really enjoy doing. We think everyone deserves more flexibility and a chance to make good money. You don’t have to stick with a job you hate because it pays well. If you are spending most of your life at your day job then you should at least be enjoying it and living your life too.
