Recently, Eden Exchange spoke with Justin Kelly, a Regional Franchisor in Far North Queensland for James’ Home Services. Justin shared his experiences working as part of the James’ Home Services team and some unique insights on what makes the business successful.

Thank’s for speaking to us Justin. What is your professional background? How did your career as a franchisor for James’ Home Services come about?

Justin Kelly
I was Regional Manager for Far North Queensland with the Rural Division of  Wesfarmers. After twelve years I left to work on our own Christmas tree farm and later to work as a small business consultant.

One of the charities I worked with regularly ran cattle droves to raise funds for chaplains working with kids who had issues in schools. James Home Services was one of the sponsors of the first cattle drove I helped organise. While on the drove, I found out about the opportunity that existed in the Far North Queensland region with James and I began the process of finding out more. Eight years later we have one of the most successful regions in the country.

What makes a great franchisee stand out?

Justin Kelly
Our focus is on being prompt, professional, and being friendly. It is a real customer service focus. Our best franchisees do these three things well and it makes them stand out from the opposition.

What are the benefits of having your own specific region?

Justin Kelly
There are three key benefits I see in having my own region. Firstly,  you build the culture. In Far North Queensland we focus on keeping a close, strong team that works together for each other’s benefit. Our motto is “We are stronger together”. Secondly, you are in control of the local marketing. Thirdly, you are truly your own boss and can organise your time and commitments accordingly.

“My advice is to focus on serving customers and don’t be afraid to get out and talk to people. You can’t build the business if you are not prepared to get out and mix it up. We are a people business; people helping people”.

Has being your own boss helped with work/life balance?

Justin Kelly
Initially I had to put in a concerted effort and longer hours to establish our business. I think you initially have to work harder but the rewards do come later. Now, I enjoy the flexibility of working from home, and booking hours I choose.

What is your advice for new franchisee owners?

Justin Kelly
My advice is to focus on serving customers and don’t be afraid to get out and talk to people. You can’t build the business if you are not prepared to get out and mix it up. We are a people business; people helping people.

Have you had any stand out moments that you probably wouldn’t have had outside this career path?

Justin Kelly
Absolutely. The stand out moments for me is seeing people coming into this business with big goals, like being able to buy their own home, and then seeing them achieve their dreams.

A growing concern for today’s consumers is how eco-friendly a company is. How do you think James’ fares on environmentally friendly practices? Have any changes or policies been implemented to keep up a greener initiative?

Justin Kelly
Our main products are all environmentally friendly. Our training and procedures manuals are all focussed on helping our franchisees be ever aware of their actions and leave less of a footprint on the environment.

The economy can be pretty fickle at the best of times, how has James’ been able to keep thriving and deal with changing trends?

Justin Kelly
We are a relatively simple business aimed at servicing peoples’ needs. Our economy now encourages both spouses to work, this means that there is less time for cleaning and other house servicing. The dynamics of modern life has actually created a large swing toward people outsourcing to companies such as James to help with the home and allow for quality family time.
