Interview with Adrian from Jim’s Antennas in South Australia

Eden Exchange recently spoke with Adrian, who is a Franchisor for Jim’s Antennas in South Australia. Adrian looks after multiple areas in the region. He discussed with us his franchising and business and journey and also provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Antennas business.

Thanks for speaking with us Adrian. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with Jim’s Antennas?

Adrian – Jim’s Antennnas in South Australia
I come from a printing background having printed on large format multi-colour presses in England for 20 years before being sponsored by Finsbury Green Printers to come to Adelaide in Dec 2004. I was getting bored of printing after 22 years and luckily had an antenna installed by the local Jim’s Antennas franchisee. After talking to him, I thought that this would be a direction I would like to take.

You currently have franchise territories available in South Australia. Which areas do you specialise in? What are some of the factors that make these regions unique?

We have new and an established franchise for sale at the moment. New territories available are Mount Barker, Norwood and Port Adelaide. Blackwood is an established franchise which has been going on for 10yrs now so has a very good customer base.

What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?

You will only get out of it what you put in. Follow the procedure which has been proven for years and it’ll be hard to fail.

What type of support does Jim’s Antennas provide once a new franchisee starts?

Adrian – Jim’s Antennnas in South Australia
Every new franchisee goes through extensive training, both with the Jim’s group as well as on-road training with other established franchisees. We have regular group meetings where all franchisees meet to discuss potential issues and to do training as required. As a group, in South Australia we have 20 other franchisees that can help us at any time, whether by phone or hands on help on site.

What major industry trends should franchise operators and buyers and need be looking out for? What’s your take on where the audio visual home services industry is heading?

Adrian – Jim’s Antennnas in South Australia
The AV industry is constantly changing so we as franchisees have to be prepared to keep up with these changes. With the role out of the NBN network we are seeing a huge increase in data cabling work, not just smart TV’s but all around the house for game consoles, PC’s in kids rooms and other devices. As for the future, who really knows but one thing is for sure it’s going to be interesting and fun finding out.

What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?

Surprisingly few challenges really. With the help of my peers and the backup from the Jim’s Group, I found it very easy to make the transition from employed to self employed.

What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?

Adrian – Jim’s Antennnas in South Australia
Not knowing what the day is going to bring. You could have three Antenna installations booked in for one day and everyone could be totally different. Single or double story, tile or tin roof, double brick or plaster board walls, internal wall drills to name but a few variants. What drives me the most is probably job satisfaction, not just by me but also my customers. It’s hard to beat seeing the look on a customers face when you have surpassed their expectations. Also the lifestyle that can be afforded is a great driver.
