We continue our series on Australian buying opportunities by speaking to David Baker who has recently put up a leading Foodworks in Hervey Bay in QLD on the market. With owners looking to require and located in a prime esplanade location, the store is perfect for both multi-store owners as a strategic acquisition and first time buyers as a lifestyle business.
Thanks for speaking with us David. Firstly, what brought you into the business? Can you tell us a about their background?
We worked in the supermarket industry and moved to Hervey Bay to closer to family. We were also attracted to the lifestyle opportunities and convenience of running a business in a coastal city like Hervey Bay.
What were some of the challenges faced to get the business to where it is today?
The introduction of Sunday trading in 2004 was challenge but also provided an opportunity to growth the business further. We also moved the business from a rented premises to an owner occupied business. While that was challening at the time it made the business a more valuable asset for us to now be controlling.
What markets does this Foodworks focus? The business is located in Hervey Bay in QLD. What are some of the upsides of buying a business in the region?
We are located in a high tourist area. We are across the road from caravan park and beach so right in the midst of commercial activity in our location.
What stage of development is the business in? What are its key strengths? How has this evolved since you began running the business?
We have run the business as a supermarket as this is our background. The business is now mature with a regular stream of customers and is well known in the area. While a new owner could expand it further, they’ll benefit from a solid foundation already in place.
Who would suite running this business?
This business would suite a family or someone to buy the building as an investment and a job.
Given that the business is going so well, why are you selling now?
We have run the business for over 16 years, and need a change to spend time with family.
What further opportunities are there for a new owner to grow this business?
The building has an opportunity to be divided into several businesses, with separate power boxes we have grease pit, large cool room, and room for a restaurant, coffee shop or other business. The shop has strong infrastructure in place, inlcuding led led light  throuhgout which iw worth around $7000 and help to reduce power costs.
What’s the most interesting part of running this business? What should a new owner expect?
The regular and new customers, we have a lot of regular customers plus tourists who are usually happy to have a chat. It makes running the business very rewarding and also allows you to interact with the local community
Thanks for your time David
