Who is cleaning up in the services industry?

The cleaning industry has humbly gone remarkably unnoticed throughout the decades. Workers or employees in office buildings not thinking twice about smudges on windows or spills in the kitchen for the next day they have disappeared, it was like a secret economy.

Today it is booming, homes, hotels, schools, restaurants, venues all require cleaning services and the industry is cashing in. The trend towards outsourcing domestic duties is set to create millions of jobs in the coming years. According to the  Australian (2015) “an estimated 2.5 million positions are the direct result of household outsourcing, which is on track to generate $325 million in revenues this year, according to one of Australia’s leading business analysts, IBISWorld chairman Phil Ruthven”.

The increase in growth is driven by dual income, middle class families who are just time poor.  It is true, in total, Australians are spending more hours in the workplace than ever before. The Bureau of Statistics says 5 million of Australia’s 7.7 million full-time workers put in more than 40 hours per week. Longer hours at work means household chores are being outsourced to home cleaning services, what was once the deemed as an expendable luxury is now a regular staple for middle class Australians.

Another factor for the boom in cleaning services is an ageing population and the Baby Boomer generation moving into retirement. It is proving beneficial for these generations as they are able to remain in their own homes rather than move to supported care facilities. The growth in this market has opportunities for franchises in abundance. But this is not just subject to commercial properties. Domestic cleanliness services have also become more readily accessible. Niche or specialty cleaning services have also been driving demand nationally and internationally.

Mike Dowling CEO and Owner of James’ Home Services: “The demand in the market is never satisfied, we have increased franchisees by 45% since 2015 and we’re still expanding”

One company that is taking advantage of this growth is James’ Home Services. According to Mike Dowling, CEO and Owner of James’ Home Services “The demand in the market is never satisfied, we have increased franchisees by 45% since 2015 and we’re still expanding”. James’ provides comprehensive training to all its new franchisees but also has an ongoing business coaching that allows a franchise to realise their financial goals. A program that is quite unique in the industry.

Increasingly the industry is also being flooded by people seeking a lifestyle change. As Felicity Avitabile, Regional Franchisor for James Home Services explains… “ my partner and I dictate when we work and not a corporation or boss that we barely know. For example, if it is a nice day we can take that walk along the beach and enjoy the sunshine, we just make sure that the hours are made up that night. Another of our franchisees is a father who wanted more family time and is getting just that, but his business has grown so quickly he’s now able to employ his own son to work with him”.

It is also a sentiment that is supported by Justin Kelly, James’ Regional Franchisor for Far North Queensland. “Initially I had to put in concerted effort and longer hours to establish our business. I think at the start you have to work harder but the rewards do come later. Now, I enjoy the flexibility of working from home, and booking hours I choose”.

James’ Home Services is experiencing such growth that demand is outstripping supply in some areas and franchisees are hitting the ground running. A James’ Home Services franchise is also proving to be affordable for people looking to run their own business. For under 30k you can purchase a franchise that suits you.
