Interview with Shane Quadrio – Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety in Northern Western Australia
Eden Exchange recently spoke with Shane Quadrio who is a regional Franchisor for Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire safety in Northern Western Australia. Shane manages multiple areas in the region. He discussed his franchising journey and provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety business in Western Australia.

Thanks for speaking with us Shane. Can you tell us a bit about your background and career? How long have you been at Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with the company?
Shane Quadrio: Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety Western Australia North
My wife Terri and I have been living in the Swan Valley for thirty years. We have two boys and love the country life. My oldest son Dylan and I also train horses and specialise in pacers.
Before I was a Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety specialist I worked in the transport industry for 27 years. My role in the transport industry required a lot of travel and time away from both my family and my horses and I was getting very frustrated. I sat back and looked at the amount of hours I was working and asked myself what I would actually get if I left? The answer was simple – not much.
One day my wife and I went to the Franchise Expo and we came across a Jim’s Test & Tag stand and I had a long chat with the guys. There were a number of reasons why I found Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety attractive. Firstly, all the hard work in starting a business had been done with systems and procedures already in place. Secondly, knowing that every hour of work that I put in would help grow my own business and build a repetitive customer base really appealed to me. I have now been with the Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety team for over 8 years.

You currently have franchise territories available in the northern parts of Western Australia. Which areas do you focus on? What are some of the factors that make running a franchise in Western Australia unique?

Currently we are looking for the right team member for areas of Port Headland, Broome and surrounding areas. With the mining sector rebuilding again after its recent boom there is strong potential for someone to grow a substantial clientele base and a successful business.

What major trends should franchise operators and buyers in Western Australia be looking out for? Given the state of the mining industry in WA, has demand for testing and tagging, compliance, fire and workplace safety services been affected?

Like with any business you have your peak and trough times but because our services go well beyond just testing & tagging, the scope of work for franchisees is broad. Demand from businesses in different mining sectors in Western Australia is still extremely strong and we are looking for additional team members to help service the demand.

What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?

To be successful in this business it doesn’t matter if you are the smartest person in the world or not. The key is to have the confidence to speak and sell yourself to businesses and then provide them the ultimate service, thus retaining clients.

What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?

The biggest challenge I faced was running my own business, something I had never done before, particularly in a time of significant national economic pressures.
I am extremely proud of the successful Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety business I have today which I built from scratch with the support of the Jim’s Group. My son has worked in tandem with me for the last four years and I am extremely proud I can pass it on to him for his future. I also take great pride in seeing my team of franchisees build their own successful business.

I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people from a vast range of working backgrounds and talking to them about their working experiences. This continues to build on my business knowledge I get a real kick out of passing such knowledge on to my own franchisee team.
