Franchise briefing with Josh Wood – ChemDry

We continue our series on Australian buying opportunities by speaking to Josh Wood, who heads up franchise sales at Chem-Dry Australia. Chem-Dry has been in business for over 30 years, since 1977, and is the largest carpet cleaning franchise in the world.

Thanks for speaking with us Josh. In simple terms, what does Chem-Dry do? Where did the inspiration for Chem-Dry Australia come from and how are you different from other other cleaning companies on on the market?

Josh Wood
We are a specialist cleaning company because of our highly developed equipment and products. We have a laboratory in the United States that is constantly working on innovating and improving the  the products and equipment. The only way to get access to these equipment and products is by becoming a Chem-Dry franchisee.

What’s your advice to potential franchisees who want to work for themselves but have never run their own business before?

Josh Wood
It can be a little uncomfortable at first but you will reap huge rewards by becoming a franchise owner. Some of these rewards are choosing the hours you want to work and being able to earn a lot more than a normal 9 to 5 job. Having a sense of fulfilment by building and growing something you started is also a key benefit of running your own franchise.

What type of support does Chem-Dry provide once a new franchisee starts operating?

Josh Wood
New franchisees receive the days of training at our head office and then as much on going technical and training support they need. We have an in-house technical consultant you can call and ask any questions you have when it comes to carpet cleaning. The benefit of this is that when you first start, there will be certain things you do not know but you can still do the job because we will help you through every step.

Where do you see the Australian cleaning industry heading into the future? What part will Chem-Dry play as the industry evolves and what are some major industry trends operators in your sector need to be aware of?

Josh Wood
Australian companies, no matter what they do and how they do it, are constantly changing and developing. That is where Chem-Dry stands out. We are always ahead of the market in keeping up with client demands for better and more healthy cleaning options. We have always been the industry leader when it comes to carpet cleaning and are making sure it stays that way. New franchises need not worry about industry trends because people always want to look after the home they live in and their health.

In your opinion, who would suit running a Chem-Dry business?

Josh Wood
The great thing about the Chem-Dry system is we have a large variety of backgrounds and walks of life that start a franchise. Some franchise owners have previously been involved in carpet cleaning and some have never worked outside of an office. We have the best training and support to ensure anyone who starts a business will be successfull.

What are some of the key achievements you are proud of at Chem-Dry? On the other hand, what challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? What are the strategic priorities for Chem-Dry Australia over the next 12 months?

Josh Wood
We are looking to continue to grow our brand and help our franchises hit their goals for where they want their business to be. This usually involves increasing sales and profitability.

I enjoy dealing with new people and watching them step into this new season in their life as well as being a part of something that is a blessing to so many people.
