First of all, Daniel, tell us a bit about your background, what lead to your journey as a Franchise Manager for Jim’s Security?

Daniel Mifsud
As a young adult I completed an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic. I worked hard, long hours in this role before buying my own antenna franchise. I worked to grow this business successfully, which also helped support my growing young family. I then moved into a wholesale national manager role within the antennas, communication and security sectors. After ten successful years in this role, in Jan 2017 I came back to focus on Security and Antennas with the Jims Group. I focus on working with people and helping them to build and establish their businesses.

Jim’s Security is a fairly new business in the Jim’s ecosphere, tell us a little about the opportunity, also touch on what security actually means for our readers?

Daniel Mifsud
Security is the key word here. It represents trust, boundaries and stability. In life we like to feel secure. We also want to to ensure our assets are secure and protected. When making this decision, it is important to know that the people you are working with are licensed and police checked. Apart from that, you want to know they are long term people backed by a long term organisation.  People make a very conscious decision to trust the Jim’s brand. It is a name synonymous with many households around Australia. It is a family and commercial brand and adds piece of mind to people making such personal intimate decisions such having having security installed.

Can you tell us a little about how Jim’s supports new franchisees in the security businesses?

Daniel Mifsud
We have a business  consumers love to call.  Having a base of customers creates an easier platform to allow new business owners to establish themselves. We have structured training; software platforms; excellent systems backed by a wealth of experience with a vision for continued expansion and growth. Apart from a strong brand name, a key part for us is having partners with certified, superior products as well as alliances with the biggest security governing bodies in Australia.

We set business plans, goals and budgets with our franchises. We continue to work with them to ensure these are being realised or modified as required. Ongoing sales and product training with access to over 150 other like minded franchise owners ensures there is a complete solid platform for a new franchise to launch their new lifestyle. Becoming part of the biggest franchise group in Australia allows them to have a lifestyle they choose. Jims has 3,700 franchises who all started with a dream and completely changed their work and business lives.

“Having a base of customers creates an easier platform to allow new business owners to establish themselves.”

Security is booming in Australia. According to IBIS World it is currently at $6 billion in revenue, and growing. Where do you see the industry going in the next 5 years and how does that relate to Jim’s Security?

Daniel Mifsud
The security industry is booming but people will continue to make decisions based on trust and reputation. Jim’s Security will set ourselves apart from the rest of our competition by doing what we do well – customer service. As technology changes, so too will consumer expectations. In both commercial or residential sectors, we have the ability to keep all franchises up to date with many facets of the industry. Consistency is a key to ensure technology and systems installed meet the requirements of all applicable standards. Products must be installed in the manner the manufacturer intended. Importantly, with such a large franchise network, the client will always be supported by the same brand with the same integrity and customer service focus we are delivering to the industry.

Eden Exchange
What is Jim’s doing in home security that differentiates it from other businesses?

Daniel Mifsud
The number one thing we have is the trust synonymous with the name. Customer satisfaction and not the bottom line will always be the driving force behind the business. Fortunately, we have the luxury of being part of a big organisation that guarantees warranties and works, regardless of  whether the original franchisee who installed the system is still in existence. As franchises buy and sell or go on holidays; we always have someone who can step up and ensure client requirements are met. We use the same systems, the same standards and the same focus on customer service every time.

Security is highly scrutinised in Australia, tells us a few of the hoops that people need to jump through before they become compliant?

Daniel Mifsud
Whilst security installers must be licensed, and insured; the Jims System ensures these things always remain in place. We have extra training and standards as an organisation in place that are above and beyond the legal requirements. This sets us apart as becoming the most professional installation and support security business in Australia.

“Jim’s Security will set ourselves apart from the rest of our competition by doing what we do well – customer service.”

Obviously, being your own boss takes a lot of discipline, what other key attributes are crucial for being a successful Jim’s Security Franchisor / Franchisee?

Daniel Mifsud
The customer is always right. It is our obligation to ensure the client is satisfied within reasonable means. Being professional includes supplying written quotes clearly detailing works to be undertaken, stating brands to be used and listening to  client needs and presenting solutions. These are the most important things to save any disappointment within this industry. Continuous training; listening and learning combined with interaction with other franchisees allows us to ensure we can provide solutions to our consumers that are in touch with the demands.

You have coached and mentored a few franchisees in your time, how has the business impacted their life?

Daniel Mifsud
I’m working with over one hundred and fifty Jim’s Antennas Franchises and now more than twenty  Jim’s Security Franchises. It is important to realise that these are our clients from a master Franchise point of view. Every franchisee has different needs and objectives. Most importantly, of course, is to be in control of a viable and stable business.

I have been able to ensure our franchisees follow the Jims model; using the flow of leads to create a platform whilst building their business via their private client bases. Working with cashflows, standards, training and ongoing business reviews means we consistently monitor the progress of each franchisee’s objectives. A franchisee is not a job, it is a business. Most franchisees who remain open minded and understand they are in control of a business have successful lives  with a flexible lifestyle.
