Set for success: How Kat Hughes from JUMP! Swim Schools Bundall juggles motherhood and a Franchise Woman of the Year nomination

Kat Hughes accepts her 2017 Franchise Woman of the Year finalist award with her partner James Rice. In just two short years her swim school has grown to over 400 students, and is on track to reaching its full capacity of 500 little swimmers in 2017.

Kat Hughes, founder of JUMP! Swim Schools Bundall, is in the running for Franchise Woman of the Year’s top gong. Her success in business is providing a positive influence on the growth of women across our rapidly-expanding international swim school franchise network.

It has been a rapid rise to business triumph for Kat, who opened JUMP! Swim Schools Bundall in April 2015 with her two-week old baby Travis and his one year-old sister Hollie on the job with her from day one.

What made you decide to open a JUMP! Swim Schools Franchise?

Kat Hughes
My partner James was a successful fitness franchisee, and we were attracted to the idea of entering into a new business with less risk than entering a start up on my own. I realised that joining the JUMP! Swim School network would offer me the same opportunities for success in business but in an industry that would be more family friendly.

Kat opened JUMP! Swim Schools Bundall with her two-week-old baby Travis and his 1-year-old sister Hollie on the job with her from day one. She hopes that she can inspire other women through her actions, and give them the courage to pursue their business ambitions while raising their families.

What has your weekly student growth been since opening?

Kat Hughes
Up to 15 students a week! I started this business in 2015 with zero customers and no marketing budget, heavily pregnant with my second child and a toddler. Within a few weeks I had 70 students enrolled. In December 2016, JUMP! Bundall had 400 little swimmers enrolled!

My enrolments continue to increase at 10 to 15 students every week, a result I attribute to word of mouth from happy customers, effective community engagement and embracing digital marketing and local area search. I am track to achieving my goal of 500 swimmers enrolled by the end of 2017, at which point JUMP! Bundall will be operating at 100% capacity!

Do you have a background in teaching children to swim?

Kat Hughes
No! My background for the last decade was in commercial kitchens as a chef. No background in swimming teaching whatsoever.

Did you find it difficult entering a new industry?

Kat Hughes
I was a little nervous at first but the support and training I received from JUMP! HQ made me realise that although I was entering a new industry, I was given all the tools and systems needed to be successful in this new venture.

JUMP! Swim Schools as a franchisor has been an excellent support on my franchisee journey and the  professional development it offers is second to none in the aquatics industry. It provides a comprehensive training program and three-month induction that linked me with internal training workshops, on-site experiences, an award winning innovative e-learning platform developed in partnership with Laurie Lawrence and great training from third party providers.

What motivates you in business?

Kat Hughes
Increasing swimming participation and skill levels within my community and educated Mums and Dads on why learning to swim at a young age is a life-saving skill, and this is what drives me. I’m honoured to improving the learning ability of children and their confidence, to help them save themselves and lower drowning statistics.

I love waking up to my beautiful family and going to work seeing all my other children, watching them grow from someone who is terrified of water, with little confidence, to progressing through our world-class competency-based swimming program and my amazing teachers who help my business be the success it is today.

Kat and James were drawn to the JUMP! Swim Schools buisness model as it is very family-friendly.

Is your franchise profitable yet?

Kat Hughes
I reached and exceeded my bottom line within months of opening, which is an awesome feeling after entering a new industry, opening in winter, and being in close proximity to a number of competitors.

What’s your plans for your future with JUMP!

Kat Hughes
I am in a very fortunate position now in being able to make a big difference in the safety of kids around water on the Gold Coast.

Thank you for your time Kat.
