Interview with Tim Tisdell, Regional Franchisor at Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety in NSW and Sydney

Eden Exchange recently spoke with Tim Tisdell, Regional Franchisor for Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety in country NSW and Sydney. While Tim has only been with the franchise for less than two years, he has had considerable success in growing his business in NSW. He discussed with us his franchising journey and provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety business.

Thanks for speaking with us Tim. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising? How long have you been at Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety and how did you first get involved with the company?

Tim Tisdell
I was involved in a previous organisation which gave me a variety of different experiences and job roles. This ranged from managing a sales territory with sales targets to managing a branch. I wanted to achieve more for my family and imrprove our lifestyle.

I wanted to use my training and the knowledge gained from my current employer and utilise it in my own business. I also wanted a business that had a solid business base with clients and could replace my current wage as a minimum. Locally there was a Jim’s Test & Tag franchise business for sale and I made the enquiry and together with my wife we started to look further into the business model.

I felt that this business model, combined with my knowledge and experiences, was an opportunity I could grow and expand to meet our professional and personal goals. I’ve now been in the business for two years. With the right attitude and planning, we have been able to grow our business to the point that we are now able to provide the opportunity to pass on our experience.

You currently have franchise territories available in country New South Wales and Sydney. Which areas do you specialise in? What are some of the factors that make these regions unique?

Tim Tisdell
Currently we have regions in country NSW and Outer Sydney. The country areas have great opportunities for a local person to build a successful business. Due to the combined services we can provide our clients, our business model is unique. We are able to provide either all or just one of our services to a wide range of businesses. Most of these regional areas keep services locally. Businesses support local businesses, it’s just what they do.

Outer Sydney is an area in which we just don’t have enough franchisees on the ground. Our plan is to find franchisees who are looking to be part of a successful business model and looking to expand their own business and professional goals.

What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?

Tim Tisdell
Basically, for me it’s about someone’s drive and input. The more you input to your business the more you will get out of it. Understanding a prospective new franchisee’s drive, financial requirements and balance of work to lifestyle are important factors for me. If these goals are understood, then I’ll provide them all of my knowledge and assistance to help them achieve these goals. This is where the drive and input for the prospective franchisee comes in. What are you prepared to do to achieve these goals?

In your opinion, what makes for a successful Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety franchise owner?

Tim Tisdell
You buy into a Franchise that has the systems, policies, equipment and training already in place. Put simply, all you need to do is follow all these and concentrate on building your business. This is no different to any other business. We need clients. Focus on building your relationship with these clients and demand for your services will follow.

What type of support does Jim’s Test & Tag and Fire Safety provide once a new franchise opens for the first time?

Tim Tisdell
For a new franchisee, their franchisor becomes there first point of call. Your franchisor will have different levels of experience but will have the ability to draw on other’s experience within our business, whether it’s a technical query or a sales/business query. This provides a great ongoing support network for all franchisees within our business to draw from.

Tim Tisdell

Being able to draw on my previous knowledge, training and experiences, I was able to triple my customer base in the first 12 months of operating my business. There are always challenges but I’m a big believer it’s what you do about these challenges, good or bad that defines your personal growth which will reflect in your business. Self-reflection is a big part of my personal growth.

What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?

Tim Tisdell
I try to provide to a client a solution base offer that they feel is based on their own individual requirements. The personal success you feel when you discuss your solution and then provide the service to your client drives you for more which in turn grows your business.
