Interview with Mark – Jim’s Antennas Franchisor in New South Wales

Eden Exchange recently spoke with Mark who is a Jim’s Antennas franchisor in Newcastle. Mark looks after multiple areas in the region and took some time out to discuss with us his franchising and business experience. He also provided some valuable insights on the Jim’s Antennas business.

Thanks for speaking with us Mark. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with Jim’s Antennas?

Mark
Hi and thanks for the opportunity to share my experience. I was already in the industry operating an antenna installation business for the previous 10 years.

I was looking to add a well known brand name that would help my business become a saleable product in the future. After all my years operating the business, I also knew that relying on being a one-man band would not be worth much in the long term. I came across Jim’s Antennas after researching online and purchased my region over 11 years ago. This is a decision that I have never ever regretted, not even for a minute! With over 20 years of experience in the industry I would make the same call again tomorrow.

You currently have franchise territories available in North Eastern New South Wales. Which areas do you specialise in? What are some of the factors that make these regions unique?

“As a Franchisor I really enjoy watching new Franchisees take their lives in a positive direction and being a part of their success.”

Mark
I have territories available in North Eastern NSW from Dubbo, Tamworth and right up the coast from Taree to Ballina. These are great opportunities for the right people to be the only Jims Antenna businesses in town and start a great business opportunity.

What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?

Mark
It is a business not a job and you will reap the benefits of your efforts. There is no feeling like being your own boss and being the one to take the rewards both financially and lifestyle wise.

In your opinion, what makes for a successful Jim’s Antennas franchise owner?

Mark
Someone who is motivated self-starting and looking inwards to make a difference in their lives and the families lives.

“We now install home theatre, data and telephone systems and some of our guys are doing security. We continue to add to our service offering as the market evolves.”

What type of support does Jim’s Antennas provide once a new franchisee starts?

Mark
The support is as much or as little as the individual requires. It really depends on the background the new Franchisee comes from. Support is always there as required be it via phone help with a technical issue or just a simple question. It is one of the principals of our business.

What major industry trends should franchise operators and buyers and need be looking out for? What’s your take on where the audio visual home services industry is heading?

Mark
Great question. In my time in the industry we have moved so far. We now install home theatre, data and telephone systems and some of our guys are doing security. We continue to add to our service offering as the market evolves.

What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?

Mark
The challenges have all been positive ones. Just being able to move with the ever-changing landscape and technical changes in the industry with the support of our industry preferred suppliers has been a great boon for us.

I am most proud of the franchisees who I have brought into our family and also now seeing them bring their children into the business.

What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?

Mark
Another great question. As a working Franchisor I love the technical side of the work, especially the commercial side. As a Franchisor I really enjoy watching new Franchisees take their lives in a positive direction and being a part of their success.
