Interview with Jason Catanzariti from Jim’s Pool Care on the Gold Coast

Eden Exchange recently spoke to Jason Catanzariti, regional manager for Jim’s Pool Care on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Jason discussed with us his franchising journey and provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Pool Care Business.

Thanks for speaking with us Jason. Can you tell us about your background and career? Were franchise opportunities something that always interested you and why did you pick Jim’s Pool Care in particular?

Jason Catanzariti
I have owned a business prior to getting into Jim’s Pool Care, but had to sell up due to health reasons.

I then went on to work for another company, but I was not happy in my new job role. I was working a nine to five job and had no flexibility, so I went looking for something else. I wanted to be my own boss again, and that’s when I found the Jim’s Pool Care franchise. I haven’t looked back since.

When someone is a first-time franchisee, what sort of qualities in a franchise should they be looking for? What advice would you have to someone working for themselves for the first time? How do you grow your customer base?

Jason Catanzariti
They should be looking for a good brand which offers great support. The advice I would give someone looking at a franchise is; do you homework, ask lots of questions and be happy with the person you are talking with. I prefer to grow my customer base by being honest, upfront and hardworking. I think honesty is a must.

Considering that the Gold Coast is a massive tourist destination and holiday hot-spot, do you find many of your clientele are hotel owners?

Jason Catanzariti
We do have a lot of commercial enquiries and our franchisees are doing commercial work. however, we also have a lot of residential work as most properties have pools.

You currently have franchise territories available across the Gold Coast. Which areas do you specialise in? What are some of the factors that make these regions unique?

Jason Catanzariti
We have territories available all over the Gold Coast. These areas are unique because there are a large number of commercial properties in most of them. This means greater work loads. It is also a great area to work outdoors, as we have great weather.

How supportive were Jim’s Pool Care when you first started your franchise?

Jason Catanzariti
They were great! If I had a problem they were only a phone call away, there was so many people I could call on with all the help and support I got. I was able to hit the ground running.

Is a Jim’s Pool Care franchisee busy all year long, or do you find you have more demand in the warmer months?

Jason Catanzariti
Yes we have more demand in the warmer months but considering the Gold Coast doesn’t really have much of a winter, you have a regular customer base which is all year long.

Tell us about any hurdles you may have overcome along the way, and what have been some of your prouder moments as you’ve grown your business?

Jason Catanzariti
My biggest hurdle along the way was starting a new business from zero customers and growing it from scratch. I thought it was going to be hard, but within the first twelve months I was so busy that I didn’t think I would be able to keep up. However, as I became more experienced I grew the business to where I was happy. My proudest moment to date was when I bought the Gold Coast region and became a regional Franchisor. I knew it was a good franchise territory to be in.

What’s the best part about your profession? Have there been many noticeable differences to your lifestyle, and work-life balance since purchasing your own Jim’s Pool Care franchise?

Jason Catanzariti
The best part is that I get to spend more time with my family and work my own hours and I get to see my children’s school events. The harder I work, the more I get from the business. Considering my main reason was a lifestyle choice, it’s been fantastic.
